Golden Globes 2017: Predicting the Nominees

At last, there's something to talk about besides politics.

The awards season officially kicks off Monday with the Golden Globe nominations. In anticipation, Joey Moser, a contributor to the website Awards Daily, to helps ABC News predict who will be among the nominees.

Moser expects that new shows and faces will do well, as the Hollywood Foreign Press likes to spotlight new talent. But they also love movie stars, so look for a lot of double nominees this year -- like Viola Davisfor "Fences" on the film side and "How to Get Away with Murder" on the TV side.

Here are the TV shows and films that seem poised for a nod on Monday:

Film

'La La Land'

Moser predicts one of the year's most-talked about movies, "La La Land," a musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, could lead the nominations this year. Besides scoring a nod in the Best Picture, Comedy or Musical category, it will likely nab nominations for Stone, Gosling and director Damien Chazelle.

'Fences'

The other "big player" this year is "Fences," the big-screen adaptation of August Wilson's stage play, Moser said. He predicts that star Denzel Washington will score double nods for director and best actor, in addition to his co-star Viola Davis. "This should help it's chances forOscars down the road," he said of the film.

'Silence'

Martin Scorsese's film about 17th century Catholic missionaries in Japan has only had limited release this year and few people have seen it, but Moser predicts that "Silence" will still earn multiple nominations in the picture, director and actor categories, including Andrew Garfield, who could also score a nod for his role in Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge."

'Moonlight'

"Moonlight" is the darling of indie films this year and Moser believes it will get some recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press. "That could help the trajectory of that film," he said. "If it makes a big showing, it could lead to Oscars down the line."

Other films that could score nominations include the drama "Manchester by the Sea," starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, and comedies "Deadpool" and "Lobster," which Moser calls "one of the most original things" he's seen in a while.

Television

'The Crown'

On the television side, Moser anticipates seeing a lot of new shows in the drama series category, including the Netflix royal drama "The Crown." "For the Hollywood Foreign Press, it's their bread and butter," he said. "You love 'Downton Abbey' and that's over, so here's 'The Crown,' which is even more prestigious." He expects it will receive multiple nominations.

'Westworld'

HBO's new drama "Westworld" is smart, chock full of stars and a bona fide hit. Moser thinks it "could make a killing" at the Globes. Expect multiple nods. Meanwhile, he's going against the grain to predict that Netflix's "Stranger Things" won't make a big showing Monday. "It's a little too niche and too nostalgic," for the Hollywood Foreign Press, he said. But, he added that there's still a chance star Winona Ryder could get a nod.

'Divorce'

On the comedy end, Moser predicts Sarah Jessica Parker, a Hollywood Foreign Press favorite, will get some love for "Divorce," her new show on HBO. "When she was on 'Sex and the City,' she won four times," Moser explained. "Their love affair with her will get them to tune in to 'Divorce,' and they'll see how great she is."

'This Is Us'

Among network shows, NBC's "This Is Us," has the best chance of scoring a nomination in the drama series category. "People cannot stop talking about it," Moser said. Tougher still, will be getting a nomination in the acting categories, but if anyone can pull it off, it will by Chrissy Metz in the supporting category, Moser predicted.

'Fleabag'

Moser's wildcard pick is the Amazon series, "Fleabag," based on star Phoebe Waller-Bridge's one-woman play. The six-episode series about a woman trying to navigate her life in London is just the kind of small show that the Hollywood Foreign Press loves with a "dark horse" star few have heard of, Moser said. Think back to previous Golden Globe wins by Gina Rodriguez in "Jane the Virgin" and Rachel Bloom for "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend."
